The US insists it has nothing to do with the coalition led by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham attacking Aleppo.
The US says the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad lost control of the major city of Aleppo in Syria because he is too dependent on Russia and Iran. The statement was issued by a spokesperson for the US National Security Council Sean Savett.
– Syria’s dependence on Russia and Iran and the country’s refusal to proceed according to the peace process outlined by the UN Security Council in 2015 created the conditions that are now developing, stated Savett.
He added that the United States has nothing to do with the attack on Aleppo by the coalition led by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Savett emphasized that the United States has classified the organization as terrorist.
The Syrian army announced on Saturday that dozens of its soldiers were killed when the HTS-led coalition attacked Aleppo.
Researcher at the Foreign Policy Institute Toni Alaranta assessed in an interview with that the moment for the operation is favorable, because the attention of the supporters of the Assad regime is elsewhere. The extremist organization Hezbollah has suffered losses in the Lebanon war against Israel, Russia is waging a war of aggression in Ukraine and Iran has not been able to react to the situation either, Alaranta stated.
President of Syria Bashar al-Assad vowed in a statement published on Saturday evening to defeat “all terrorists and their supporters”.
Among other things, independent of the Kremlin Moscow Times has said that al-Assad is currently in Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has not commented on the information.
