If you like sci-fi and don’t have anything planned tonight, you should turn on the TV. There are three genre representatives on display there that have it all. It starts with the Steven Spielberg blockbuster War of the Worlds, then things get even crazier with District 9 and Tides.
War of the Worlds on TV: What is the Steven Spielberg hit about?
War of the Worlds tells a story that could hardly be more classic: The Earth is attacked by Martians. In the middle of it all are worker Ray Terrier (Tom Cruise) and his two children. Together they want to escape from New York from the aliens’ huge tripods, but of course they also have to deal with other panicked people along the way.
District 9 works very differently than War of the Worlds, but is also extremely fascinating
They are in District 9 Aliens have been stranded on Earth for quite a while and have to eke out their existence in a kind of ghetto. When they are about to be relocated, contact occurs that slowly but surely causes the official Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley) to mutate into an alien. Which makes him a very desirable man – because he is the only person who can operate the alien weapons.

Tides: That’s what this unusual film from Germany is about
Tides comes from Tim Fehlbaum, who already scored a small but nice sci-fi hit with Hell. This time humanity is faced with a bleak vision of the future, not of the burning sun, but of one flooded earth to do. That’s why some people live on the Kepler space station and send a mission back to the planet after 200 years to see whether it is habitable again.

Today, all sci-fi fans really get their money’s worth on TV
Steven Spielberg delivers with War of the Worlds true sci-fi masterpiece away. He gives HG Wells’ classic material a modern twist and deals with the national trauma of 9/11. District 9 comes around the corner surprisingly, dirty and impressively approachable, while Tides strikes a completely different, somewhat calmer and sometimes philosophical tone.
If you’re already starving afterward craving more sci-fi, We have good news for you: The next Star Wars series is starting earlier than expected on Disney+.
