Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is on a quick visit to the United States for a meeting with President-elect Donald Trump, Canadian CBC reports.
The meeting comes less than a week after Trump threatened on his social media platform a 25 percent tariff on all goods from Canada and Mexico from the day he steps into the White House.
– When Donald Trump makes such statements, he also means to implement them. There is no doubt about it, Trudeau said at a news conference in his homeland on Friday, before leaving for Florida.
– It is our responsibility to highlight that he would then also not only harm Canadians who cooperate so well with the United States. He would also raise prices for Americans and hurt American industry and business.
Trudea’s staff has not wanted to say what the two will talk about, however, during, among other things, a dinner at Trump’s Mar-a-lago residence. There, Trump and his associates are preparing since entering the White House.
Trump’s reason for threatening tariffs is himself that drugs and migrants are pouring across the border into the United States and that Canada and Mexico are not doing what they can to stop the flow.
Mexico and Canada and China, which Trump has threatened with 10 percent tariff surcharges for similar reasons, are the US’s three most important trading partners.
