The goal in the new cancer plan: Three weeks to treatment

Sweden is in a good position in terms of cancer care, but there are parts that need to be reviewed. When investigator Mef Nilbert hands over proposals for an updated cancer strategy to Minister of Health Acko Ankarberg Johansson (KD), early diagnostics and shorter waiting times are in focus.

– Sweden is very well positioned internationally and we have high-quality cancer care. Even so, cancer is the leading cause of years of life lost nationally and is also expected to become the leading cause of death. That we take measures to improve care is of great importance, says Ankarberg Johansson during a press conference.

The proposals are based on three overarching goals: reduced risk of developing cancer and that more people are diagnosed early, increased cancer survival and the best possible quality of life during and after cancer.

One of the suggestions is that a maximum of three weeks should pass from the time someone receives a cancer diagnosis to the start of treatment. Another area is that long-term follow-up of children and young adults should apply to people up to 29 years of age. This is to draw attention to late side effects that may occur several years after the end of treatment.

The investigator also proposes an investigation of the pharmaceutical system.

– Pharmaceutical development has been breathtaking. But we have a slightly old system. Are we, for example, good enough at pricing documents, says Mef Nilbert.

Other proposals deal with preventive efforts to prevent cancer such as tobacco exposure, alcohol policy, physical activity and UV radiation.
