AFP Lithuania expels three Chinese diplomats News in brief

Relations between the two countries are weighed down by Lithuania’s rapprochement with Taiwan and the suspected involvement of Chinese ships in cable damage in the Baltic Sea.

Lithuania expels three diplomats from the Chinese embassy in Vilnius.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania says that those surveyed have participated in the violation of the Vienna Convention regulating the activities of diplomats and the laws of Lithuania. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not elaborate on the exact reason for the deportations.

Relations between China and Lithuania are weighed down by Lithuania’s rapprochement with Taiwan and the suspected involvement of Chinese ships in cable damage in the Baltic Sea.

In 2021, Lithuania allowed Taiwan to open a liaison office comparable to a mission in Vilnius, angering China.

On Wednesday, Lithuania joined the investigation team to investigate cable damage in the Baltic Sea, according to Finland and Sweden. China has denied any involvement in them and said on Friday it was ready to cooperate with the investigation.
