Firefighters from Stations No. 1 and No. 2, Chatham-Kent police and paramedics responded to a fire in the upper floor of a Timmins Crescent residence about 8:30 pm, Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Dan Parent said at the scene Wednesday night.

Parent said the fire started in the bedroom and a 58-year-old male occupant was conscious and alert.

“He recognized there was a fire and he tried to put it out with his bare hands and burned the fingertips of one of his hands,” the assistant chief added.

The man also suffered smoke inhalation.

The man was assessed and taken to hospital by paramedics, Parent said.

Prior to being transported to hospital, Chatham-Kent EMS used a CynoKit to provide immediate treatment for the patient’s condition, said a CKFR media release.

The cause has been ruled as accidental with damage being estimated at $100,000 said the CKFR.

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified.

Firefighters arrived to see flames coming from the second-storey window, said the CKFR.

“Prompt actions of the fire crews led to the containment of the fire within the bedroom, preventing further spread,” CKFR said.

The fire caused smoke and fire damage throughout the unit, “but fortunately, the fire did not extend to adjacent units,” the CKFR added.

Neighbors said the smell of smoke and a barking dog alerted them to the blaze.

“I came outside and saw flames coming out of the room and automatically grabbed my kids and got out,” said a next-door neighbor, who didn’t want to be named. “My only concern was getting my kids out of the house.”

“Flames were out the whole window” on the second floor, neighbor Kyla Bozh said.

“We (had) just seen the flames and then the fire trucks came up,” said Kyle Mantle, who lives nearby,

“I think the fire department handled it pretty good,” Mantle said. “They isolated the fire pretty quickly.”
