The last time it happened was in 2021 and then it was mainly Kangos who were affected by ice dams in the Laion River and several places in the village were flooded.
Pajala municipality had to work hard trying to keep the water masses at bay.
This time the cause was an ice jam near the village of Peräjävaara, which is slightly downstream from Anttis. The emergency services have been on the scene and have been able to ascertain that no socially important functions have been affected.
– It was a small blockage with fairly local effects, says rescue manager Juha Pasma.
Kaj’s basement became an indoor rink
Kaj Bohm was the one that was hit the hardest when the water started to rise. He lives on a headland facing the Torneälven and was completely cut off from the outside world when the road to his home flooded.
Only on Thursday did he dare to drive on the road as the water had frozen into an ice rink. The flooding in the basement formed an indoor rink.
The hope was that it would return to normal after a few really cold nights, but on Friday afternoon the water started to rise again.
It’s not without him starting to wonder if it’s a new trend.
– It has been strange autumns, long and warm, he says.
