Public transport: what to do now to pay less in January

Public transport what to do now to pay less in

Bus, metro, tram, RER… Until now, in Ile-de-France, public transport represents a certain financial cost. But prices will soon drop.

In Paris and the Paris region, public transport represents a significant part of users’ budgets. With an annual Navigo subscription costing nearly 950 euros (for zones 1 to 5), or around 86 euros per month (88.80 euros as of January 1, 2025), the cost can quickly add up, particularly for low-income households or students. . To this are sometimes added additional expenses, such as the cost of park and ride facilities, connection costs if they are outside the Navigo zone. Even for those who do not have a subscription, a simple transport ticket for a one-off trip can be expensive. Not to mention the fact that many users find that the service is not worth the price, especially in light of the latest price increases. But that’s soon history for occasional travelers…

In fact, recently, Île-de-France Mobilités voted for “simplified pricing” for public transport in the Ile-de-France region. From January 1, 2025, there will only be two pricing options instead of around 50,000 until now. Occasional users, who do not have a Navigo package, will be able to purchase a single ticket either for the metro-train-RER at a price of 2.50 euros or a ticket for the bus and tram at 2 euros, whatever or the area used (excluding airports). What is also changing, and which is very interesting for further limiting costs, is the Navigo Liberté+ pass. From next year, this package for which you only pay for the journeys you make will be valid everywhere in Île-de-France. Previously, it was limited to Paris and the bus and certain tram networks.

With this pass, a metro-train-RER ticket will now cost 1.99 euros, and a bus-tram ticket only 1.60 euros. Bus or tram connections will also be offered. But to take advantage of these future advantageous rates, there is a step to take before January to be sure to receive your pass on time and thus avoid the peak in requests. To do this, you must make your request on the connect.iledefrance-mobilites.fr website or at a Navigo agency. If this is your first request, an application fee of 8 euros is applied. Once your file has been validated, allow approximately 21 days to receive your Navigo Liberté+ pass at home (excluding weekends and public holidays), knowing that the time may increase if there are many requests.

Also note that if you already have a valid Navigo pass, “you can, from 48 hours after validation of your subscription, update it at a point of sale or on an RATP or Transilien SNCF machine”indicates Île-de-France Mobilités. This will allow you to obtain your new package more quickly, while avoiding a long wait.
