Australia’s new law: Young people must not use social media

Australias new law Young people must not use social media

▸ Australia’s Senate has hammered through a new law that bans children under 16 from using social media, the BBC reports. This applies to apps such as Tiktok, Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook. All platforms have one year to present how users’ age can be verified. If children under 16 can still access social media, the companies risk fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars, equivalent to roughly 355 million Swedish kronor. The country is the first in the world to introduce the ban. The country’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese claims that too much time on social media poses a risk to children’s physical and mental health.
