The Australian Senate has approved a law that prohibits the use of social media by children under the age of 16, reports Australian broadcaster ABC.

As a result of the law, social media platforms such as Tiktok, Instagram, Reddit, Facebook, X and Snapchat can be fined almost 50 million Australian dollars, or about 30 million euros, if they fail to prevent the use of social media by under-16s.

The Australian Senate passed the bill by a vote of 34-19. On Wednesday, the law also clearly passed in the country’s House of Representatives.

The law will enter into force in a year.

It is not yet known how social media companies could control the age limit of users.
