Authority warns everyone with an electric car – after the fatal accident

Authority warns everyone with an electric car after the

It was on September 23 that a Volvo XC40 electric car crashed through a wall on the third floor of a parking garage in Sandvika outside Oslo.

The driver, who was a man in his 60s, died when the car crashed to the ground.

Now the Statens vegvesen, which is the road authority in Norway, is warning everyone who has an electric car.

The model had been recalled

After an investigation, the Swedish Road Administration has now established that there were no technical faults with the Volvo involved in the accident.

– Our investigations show that there was nothing wrong with the gas pedal, says Jens Petter Storøsenior engineer and specialist at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, to TU.

The car model in question had previously been recalled for a defect that could have potentially led to unwanted acceleration.

However, data from the accident saved by the car shows that the accelerator pedal was successively depressed for over half a second, then fully activated for three seconds until the car crashed through the wall.

Nothing wrong with the car

According to Storrø, the data shows that it is not a short circuit or similar.

According to one press release from the police the driver had climbed into his car from the passenger side as the driver’s door was blocked by another car.

In 30 meters the car accelerated to a speed of 62 km/h before crashing through the wall and landing on the roof three floors below.

Authority warns everyone with an electric car

In recent years, the Norwegian Road Administration has noted that several drivers have complained about unwanted acceleration in their electric cars, and in the past year alone, five such cases have been investigated.

In all cases, it has been concluded that there have been no faults with the cars, which means that handling errors are the likely explanation.

Therefore, Jens Petter Storrø is now warning everyone with an electric car to be careful, Danish reports Nobody.

In a traditional petrol or diesel car, the power is delivered with a certain delay, and accompanied by the sound of the engine.

A modern electric car, on the other hand, can deliver all the power completely silently as soon as you touch the gas pedal, which can have devastating consequences if you accidentally touch the pedal.
