(Finance) – The ceasefire in Lebanon came into force overnightthe result of the agreement reached yesterday and announced at the same time by the American President Joe Biden and the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The two leaders spoke on the phone and reached an agreement, which leaves Israel full freedom of action.
The truce ends two months of uninterrupted war between Israel and Hezbollah. The truce it should last 60 daysbut the Israeli leader has already made it clear that it will depend on what happens on the ground.
“Hezbollah will not be allowed to threaten Israel’s security”Biden explained, adding that “there will be no American troops in southern Lebanon.”
The American President also anticipated that “in the next few daysthe United States will launch a new initiative, together with Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, Israel and other countries, to reach a ceasefire in Gaza too and the release of the hostages held by Hamas”. The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken he seemed confident and declared that the agreement will help bring about an end to the war in Gaza too.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikaticommenting on the ceasefire, said that it is “a fundamental step towards regional stability”.
Before the official announcement of the truce by the two leaders from Washington and Tel Aviv, Netanyahu wanted to explain to his followers the reasons for the trucestating that it is needed to face the Israeli threat, stock up on weapons and separate the fronts to isolate Hamas. “If Hezbollah violates the agreement and tries to rearm, we will strike,” he warned.
