Värmland parliamentarian’s letter to Norway after stopped cooperation: “Find a solution”

The social-democratic Värmlander Lars Mejern Larsson is, in addition to being a Member of Parliament, also a member of the Nordic Council. Now he turns to the Norwegian government and calls for a solution to the failed cooperation project between Swedish and Norwegian police in the border areas.

Makes cooperation difficult

The fact that Norwegian police work unarmed seriously complicates cooperation, above all at the police station on the border in Eda, which is currently being completed, where there will be a Swedish and a Norwegian entrance. There, armed Swedish police will not be able to move with weapons on the Norwegian side of the station. And Swedish police are not allowed to work unarmed. Nor can Swedish police patrol together with their Norwegian colleagues on the Norwegian side of the border.

“Find solution”

Now Värmland member of parliament Lars Mejern Larsson (S) appeals to the Norwegian government in a letter to find a solution to the problem so that the cooperation can continue:

“The goal must be to find a solution that works for both sides. I hope that we can take on this challenge with the same spirit of trust and cooperation that already characterizes the relations between our countries”, writes Mejern Larsson in the letter.

He also emphasizes that cooperation is a cornerstone in the work to combat cross-border crime:

“In troubled times, it is more important than ever to strengthen – not weaken – police cooperation between Nordic countries”.
