In various places in central Uppsala, attention was paid to “Orange day” – the day to highlight men’s violence against women – with lit orange lights on Monday.
The day was also the end point for a targeted operation carried out by the police.
– We have knocked on doors, been to the square, talked to the public and handed out information about the importance of reporting when you suspect that a woman has been affected, says Åsa Larsson, local police area manager for Uppsala and Knivsta.
– We have also sought out suspected perpetrators of violence. Several people have been detained.
Worse on sexual exploitation
Sexual exploitation is part of men’s violence against women, and there the police have not been as successful when it comes to catching sex buyers.
Over the past ten years, there have been an average of 34 cases of sex purchases in Uppsala per year, and so far this year there have only been four cases.
– It is a vulnerable group and part of this social problem. We are now working with new methods around it, because we are not good and must become much, much better, says Åsa Larsson.
