MEPs will once again vote on the return of retirement at 62. At least, if they can, when a majority is in favor.
And here we go again! The National Assembly will once again be called upon to decide on the retirement age, one year after the much-criticised Macron reform which raised the legal age from 62 to 64 years. After the National Rally which failed in its quest in October, due to lack of support from the left, it is the turn of La France insoumise to submit a new text to the vote of the deputies to return to the old rules.
LFI proposes to raise the legal retirement age to 62 years while reducing the contribution period to leave at full rate: 168 quarters would be necessary with this law (42 annuities), while today it takes 172 (43 annuities). This fight, carried out for a long time by the New Popular Front, will be put to the vote of deputies this Thursday, November 28, 2024.
Nearly 1000 amendments to delay the vote
Unlike the vote in October where, out of pure war and political ego, the left did not support the similar proposal defended by the RN, this time, the text has a good chance of being adopted. The left alliance (NFP) will vote in unison in favor and the frontist deputies should also vote “for” the text. Between them, they represent 316 deputies, or the absolute majority. Adoption therefore seems obvious… At least in theory.
Because in reality, this text is proposed in a special context: the LFI parliamentary niche. This means that on Thursday, only proposals from rebels will be examined in the Assembly. But at midnight, curtain! No more debates or votes can take place.
Thus, in order to delay the vote as much as possible, the Macronist and LR deputies tabled nearly 1000 amendments. Enough to drag out the debates with, ultimatelythe hope of a renunciation of the left or of discussions which would not have succeeded before the bell.
Even if the pension reform proposed by LFI is adopted by the deputies, this same text would have to be approved by the Senate. Mission impossible: the upper house is on the right and supports the government, so it will not vote for a return to the old rules. So there are no illusions…
