Bitter news for all Mass Effect fans. The Humanoid Origin studio is bankrupt and a game will never be released.
One of Mass Effect’s most promising indirect sequels will never see the light of day. Because Casey Hudson’s studio is bankrupt and development on the game is completely stopped. The reason for this is an unexpected problem with financing.
So far there is only a teaser of the actual new Mass Effect:
Who is Casey Hudson? Longtime RPG fans should know Casey Hudson, as he worked at BioWare for a long time. His best-known work is probably the original Mass Effect trilogy, for which he worked as game director. However, in 2020 he left the studio and the following year founded “Humanoid Origin” – a new development studio.
What was the problem? The answer is simple: money. There was an unexpected collapse in funding, although details of how this came about are unknown.
A statement on LinkedIn said:
We previously informed our team that Humanoid Origin would be closing. Despite our best efforts to protect the company from the broader challenges facing the industry, an unexpected collapse in funding has meant we are no longer able to continue our work.
We deeply regret that we will not be able to complete our new sci-fi universe. However, our main concern at the moment is with our team and we are striving to support everyone in finding new employment.
In our time together, the team has made incredible progress and demonstrated the ability to produce fantastic work, whilst fostering a culture of fun and creativity. We thank everyone for their talent, courage and friendship.
Thanks to everyone who accompanied us on this journey.
What was already known about the game? Basically not much so far, because there hasn’t been an official announcement yet, and an exact title for the game hasn’t yet been decided. In recent years, however, artwork has been published again and again to give a first impression of the style of the game.
What’s next with the project? The game seems to be completely over and development will no longer be continued. Of course, it’s not impossible that something new can be built from the remains of the game in the future – but that’s up in the air. And that’s somehow fitting for an indirect Mass Effect successor.
Another project that Mass Effect fans are waiting for is Exodus.
