It was in the year 2022 that an extensive outbreak of crayfish plague was found in the Skellefteälven and the county administrative board made the decision to declare part of the Skellefteälven as crayfish-infected. That decision is valid until 2024, but will not be extended.
– There was a tsunami of crayfish spores along the coast in 2022, but now we haven’t seen any. But it is completely natural, if there are no cancers, there is no infection, says Ulf Carlsson.
According to him, there is a small probability that the fishing rights owners will be able to test fish next season. Whether new crayfish are planted is up to the fishing rights owners.
– It is a long and costly process, but it is in their interest. As it looks now, we will not be pushing for money from the county board, says Ulf Carlsson.
The municipality has fought hard to get rid of the plague. There was a concern that the infection would remain for many years.
