But despite this festive atmosphere, the speech given by the Swapo candidate, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, testifies to the uncertainty which reigns a few days before the vote.
At 72, the current vice-president asked her supporters to show themselves “ very serious » faced with the threat of an opposition victory. She encouraged them to continue to convince their loved ones and explain to them how to vote. During a lengthy speech, she also tried to defend the record of her party which has been weakened by a series of corruption scandals. There Namibia is the second most unequal country in the world according to the World Bank.
If elected, the Swapo candidate would become the first woman to lead Namibia, but she faces a strong candidate: Panduleni Itula. In 2019, he broke away from Swapo to run as an independent. He still won nearly 30% of the votes. Since then, he has founded his own party, the IPC.
