The opposition demands that the government make it clear that it intends to live up to the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant and arrest Israel’s prime minister if he comes to Sweden, reports Aftonbladet.
“Sweden has an obligation to arrest and hand over persons who are wanted by the ICC.” writes Social Democrat party leader Magdalena Andersson according to the newspaper.
The Norwegian government has said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be arrested if he appears in Norway. The arrest warrant also applies to his former defense minister Yoav Gallant as well as Hamas leader Mohammad Dayf.
On Thursday, Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) stated that “Sweden and the EU support the court’s important work and protect its independence and integrity”.
But that is not enough, also believes the leader of the Left Party, Nooshi Dadgostar:
– The Minister of Foreign Affairs has created international uncertainty about how Sweden views international law, she says according to Aftonbladet.
The Green Party’s spokeswoman Amanda Lind also demands more clarity and sharpness.
