Environmentalist group Extinction Rebellion has closed four of London’s busiest bridges as part of its actions against the climate crisis.
Hundreds of protesters gathered at the Waterloo, Blackfriars, Lambeth and Westminster bridges over the River Thames to call for an end to new fossil fuel investments.
Due to the demonstrations, queues of vehicles formed on the roads.
London Police Service said “protest groups” had been identified and police officers were trying to control the disruption in traffic.
Demonstrators reportedly held placards reading “End fossil fuels immediately” and “Love in action”.
The group planned to close the crowded roads in central London and occupy the busiest bridges of the city within the scope of their actions, which started on April 9 and were planned to last for 9 days.
The activists, who demanded that investments in fossil fuels be stopped, said that the actions they organized aimed to disrupt the normal life order in London and reach as many people as possible.
In a message shared on Twitter, the Metropolitan Police said, “We are aware of the series of demonstrations that took place today. A police operation is underway and officers are at the scene and are trying to counteract the impact.”
