In The Good Fight, the acerbic lawyer Diane Lockhart dares to make a fresh start and doesn’t just see herself with the… dark sides of the legal system, but also confronted with an increasingly tense political mood.

That’s what The Good Fight on Disney+ is about

After losing all her savings due to a lawyer colleague’s financial fraud, lawyer Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) has to rethink things. Instead of a gilded retirement, an unexpected new beginning awaits them.

Diane moves to a law firm that specializes in police violence in Illinois. Together with her colleagues, the lawyers Maia Rindell (Rose Leslie) and Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo) as well as the firm’s own private detective Jay DiPersia (Nyambi Nyambi).

Here, Diane is confronted with the harsh realities of her hometown of Chicago and its legal system, as well as drastic political changes that affect her work.

The Good Fight seems like a cheerfully extended middle finger – and is very refreshing at the same time

The series is officially called a drama, But it’s so much more than that: evil satire with clear jabs at a narrow political climate. Open social criticism against structural discrimination. And a dash of thriller when Diane and her colleagues in court are increasingly taken by surprise by political chaos in the White House.

It’s not uncommon to feel like The Good Fight, which first aired in 2017, like a happily extended middle finger
against the newly begun term of office of a certain president in the USA and has a pleasantly refreshing effect.

The series is passionate about dishing it out and doesn’t hide its political stance, but also leaves room for its own side to admit its mistakes. Laughing at yourself is as natural a part of The Good Fight as it is at your opponents.

The question of right and wrong becomes blurred in The Good Fight

Even though the series clearly thrives on the private complications of its characters, who come from a wide variety of cultural and social backgrounds (and who tend to clash with each other), a large part of the series takes place in the court or office.

Unlike its predecessor, Good Wife, The Good Fight focuses on the professional lives of its characters. So what the title suggests – trying to do the right thing, fighting for the right thing. And that is anything but easy in a world in which right and wrong are increasingly becoming blurred in the face of political upheaval.

The series also impresses with a dynamic ensemble that you enjoy watching as they verbally at each other’s throats in the courtroom. This also includes more well-known faces like Rose Leslie, and later Michael Sheen (Good Omens) and Mandy Patinkin (Homeland, Criminal Minds) in a guest role.

Last but not least, the series has had recent political developments
none of their relevance has been lost
and shows in a striking way how structural discrimination in various forms can take root in society.

The Good Fight premiered on February 19, 2017 on CBS and is included in the Disney+ subscription, among other things.
