Plot and premise are perfectly coordinated: Joon-ho Bong’s dark work kneels with relish in his striking “We live in a society” mode, every single topic is somehow relevant to problems that are currently affecting humanity. In the future, the globe has become uninhabitable, covered by a thick layer of ice, People freeze to death within seconds of going outside. A last handful of the world’s population lives in a train that races endlessly around the globe on tracks. At the back the “lower class” lives in the dirt, at the front the rich live in luxury.
Furious action and desperate class warfare in the sci-fi hit Snowpiercer
In the film, humanity is compressed into a small diamond of civilization under the greatest possible pressure from the environment. On the train ark there is a collapse in a very small space distribution war out of. The film resolves the conflicts between the layers tough battles and crazy comedy. In the middle of it all, a helpless but incredibly angry Chris Evans fights.
His character Curtis has no real goal, the main thing is to “move forward”, every wagon captured with bloody losses is a success. In preserving the small remainder of comfort and quality of life, there is no room for reason or violence. The civil war acts like a hand grenade in a shoebox; the eruption affects everyone at some point. The walls of the train will soon no longer be able to withstand the wild humanity. From this narrowness, Snowpiercer gains great cinematic energy and political power. The film has lost none of that to this day.
