Massive protest against house prices in Barcelona

Tens of thousands of Barcelona residents – according to police around 22,000 people – took to the streets on Saturday to protest against high rents in the popular tourist destination.

The protesters’ signs included messages criticizing that apartments are bought up as investments and not used as homes.

The average rent in Spain has doubled in the last ten years and the price increases have been particularly noticeable in big cities like Barcelona and Madrid.

Many local residents also see tourism as a contributing factor to the rampant rents.

Barcelona’s city hall has promised to rid the city of 10,000 so-called “tourist apartments”, residences licensed for short-term rental, by 2028.

“Residents in the area are advised to stay indoors and avoid windows facing the fire. Keep windows and doors closed and, if possible, turn off ventilation,” they write.

    Rapid spread of multi-resistant bacteria

A multi-resistant strain of the E. coli bacteria is spreading rapidly in Europe, according to the Public Health Agency, which describes the rate of spread as “worrying”.

The authority refers to a new study from the European Infection Protection Agency that shows how the resistant bacterial strain has spread within and between European countries.

“The study is further proof of the serious increase in multi-resistant bacteria that risks reducing the possibility of treating severe bacterial infections in the future. Urgent measures are required to counter the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in Sweden and globally,” says Vilhelm Müller, investigator at the Public Health Agency in a press release.
