Moped car and winter tires – that’s what the law says

Moped car and winter tires thats what the law

Before the winter of 1999/2000, requirements for winter tires were introduced for the first time in Sweden, according to NTF.

Today, a passenger car must be equipped with approved winter tires during the period from 1 December to 31 March, as long as winter road conditions prevail.

However, the rules are not necessarily the same for other categories of vehicles that are similar in many ways to passenger cars. Here is what applies to moped cars.

Moped car or A-tractor – what’s the difference?

A moped has many similarities with an A-tractor, as they can both be driven by drivers from the age of 15 who have a so-called AM driving license, and both must be equipped with an LGF triangle at the rear.

Unlike an A-tractor, which are usually ordinary passenger cars that have been converted, a moped is registered as a class II moped, or EU moped.

This means that the top speed is 45 km/h compared to 30 km/h for an A-tractor, but also that the maximum weight in ready-to-drive condition may not exceed 425 kilos. The latter means according to NTF that a moped car tends to have a low crashworthiness.

Does a moped have to have winter tires? So sure the law

Considering that the crash safety of mopeds is low, and that they are usually driven by young, inexperienced drivers, it may seem obvious that they should be equipped with winter tires in the winter.

It may seem particularly obvious given that, since December 2023, A-tractors must be equipped with winter tires on the same premises as passenger cars.

However, the answer to the question of whether one must equip one’s moped with winter tires is, there are no such requirements.

Although the law does not require mopeds to be equipped with winter tires, it is highly recommended not to skimp on this important safety detail.
