A champion has been dominating weak players for 3 patches, but he is in the “wrong” position

There are some champions in League of Legends that are hated by many parts of the community. These often include simple champions that lower-ranked players find difficult to deal with. Currently, a simple champion is dominating a lane where he doesn’t really belong.

Which champion is it about? When a champion in LoL is hated by many players, it is often for one of two reasons. He is too complex that players have to fully understand the abilities, or the champion is so simple that you get upset if you die against him.

Garen is a champion who belongs to the second category. His kit is super simple and you don’t have to understand much. He also has some tools that help him survive in the laning phase. Even the professionals have discovered him this year. He currently seems to be quite successful with weaker players in the lower ranks. Even in a lane he doesn’t really belong in.

An insider tip for lower ranks

How successful is cooking currently? If you look at Garen’s current stats on U.GG, you’ll see that he’s doing pretty well in Bronze and Silver – especially in the midlane, which is more associated with mages and AP champions.

  • On the midlane he currently has a win rate of 54.7% in bronze and 54.08% in silver.
  • On his actual lane, the top lane, he has a win rate of 50.88% in bronze and 50.85% in silver
  • The 2 patches before that (14.22/14.21) he also had a win rate of between 53% and 54% on the midlane in silver and bronze.
  • That’s a pretty high win rate, even if you keep in mind that he doesn’t see much play in the midlane. There he only has a pick rate of 0.6%. Still, he seems to be a pretty good lane champion that weaker players in particular have a problem with. That’s because of its simple kit.

Garen also seems to work well in higher ranks, but only in the midlane. He has a 52.55% win rate at all ranks above Emerald. On the top plane, however, Garen is pretty bad, with a win rate of just 48.8%.

Easy to understand, difficult to counter

What makes Garen so successful? on the midlane? Garen’s kit is pretty good in lane in 1v1. His passive allows him to heal himself if he doesn’t take any damage for a short period of time. This is good against midlane champions who continually attempt to damage with abilities.

  • His Q allows him to ignore slows and silence the opponent for a short time. Mages can rarely defend themselves without skills.
  • Garen passively gains resistance through his W. If he activates it, he receives a shield and, more importantly, toughness. This will reduce the duration of stuns for a short time.
  • His ultimate combined with his aggressive item build with crit items allows him to quickly kill many champions with little health like an assassin.
  • His general kit is countered by many champions on the top lane, mid laners who don’t know the match-up have more problems. Especially because players are often not that good at their champions in the lower ranks. You don’t have to learn much to cook. You can focus on the lane aspects.

The patch is still quite fresh, but if you look at the last patches, Garen’s success will probably not change for the time being. After all, he isn’t played as often as other champions.

There are complex champions that are played primarily by professionals. A new champion from 2024 was changed because of this: LoL: A new champion has to be changed after less than 6 months because professionals are simply too good
