Baku climate conference ending in disappointment funding falling short

Poor and climate change-prone countries are getting only a fraction of the support they had hoped for.

The ongoing climate meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan is coming to an end. According to the schedule, the meeting was supposed to end already yesterday, Friday. Maintenance men are said to be already collecting furniture.

However, it is not unusual for climate meetings to stretch into overtime.

According to preliminary information, the meeting in Baku is ending in great disappointment. The main issue of the meeting is the organization of financing for the poor and the countries most affected by climate change.

These countries estimate that they need about 1,300 billion dollars of money every year until 2035. Developed countries say they are only capable of $250 billion. This would leave poor countries in a very difficult position as the climate warms and sea levels rise.

Germany, which has been active in the negotiations, has pointed out that money should be raised from sources other than the states, and that other elements, such as debt forgiveness, should also be included.

Climate negotiations are overshadowed by the US election result. The country’s new leadership is about to leave the negotiations and leave climate change to others.
