For several weeks, it has no longer been possible to use a type of tire on certain roads in France. It’s high time to check which ones equip your car to avoid a fine!
Unless you are a car enthusiast, it is very likely that you do not know the characteristics of your car’s tires and perhaps not even their brand! And it’s quite logical: as long as they are in good condition, everything is fine. However, if you are traveling in certain regions of France, you should take more interest, in particular by checking their type. Because for several weeks, certain models have been purely and simply banned!
For several years, the Mountain Law has required all vehicles traveling in certain mountainous areas of France to be equipped with winter tires or anti-slip devices, such as chains or snow socks. This regulation applies in 48 departments between November 1 and March 31, even if you are only passing through these regions. Until now, a certain flexibility allowed the use of all-season tires, marked M+S (Mud and Snow). But that has just changed. If you’re used to riding these tires, it’s high time to take a look at your equipment.
In fact, since November 1, 2024, tires only marked M+S will no longer be accepted for driving on mountain roads where winter equipment is mandatory. The tolerance that prevailed until then is over, and only tires bearing the 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain Snowflake) logo, recognizable by their symbol representing a mountain with three peaks and a snowflake, are authorized.
Why this change? The reason is simple: tires marked 3PMSF provide much better grip on snow, ice and other slippery surfaces because they undergo rigorous laboratory testing. Unlike M+S tires, which do not meet a specific winter performance standard, 3PMSF tires guarantee increased safety in extreme conditions. They are therefore more adapted to the requirements of the Mountain Law, which aims to reduce the number of accidents on the roads in winter.
In fact, if your current tires only bear the M+S marking, you absolutely must change them. Driving with non-compliant tires in the regions concerned since November 1 exposes you to a fine of 135 euros and even the immobilization of your vehicle. It is better to comply with the new regulations to avoid unpleasant surprises!
And, above all, be very attentive and be wary of good deals that might not be good deals. Because although many all-season tires are already available with the 3PMSF marking, some sellers continue to offer tires marked M+S, often at attractive prices, without mentioning that they are now prohibited. It would be a shame to spend on non-compliant tires.
