Christmas is fast approaching and around the houses candlesticks, stars and even Christmas trees are starting to take place. Many people also like to increase the coziness factor with flowers and plants for Christmas, of which some classics are amaryllis, hyacinths and poinsettias.
But when should you actually get your Christmas flower and how do you make it last all Christmas long?

News24 have talked to Sofia Kaare Janssonsocial media manager at Interflora, who gives tips on how to make different types of Christmas flowers last as long as possible.
Poinsettia
This flower is especially sensitive to cold and drafts, so remember to place it in a bright place but not directly above an element. When the poinsettia blooms, you can water it with nutrients. Then let it dry a little between waterings.
– The poinsettia, which is a favorite at Christmas, is very sensitive to cold. So when you buy a poinsettia, it’s important that you don’t leave it out in the cold on the way home, she says.
Amaryllis as a cut flower
In order for the amaryllis to do well as a cut flower, you should cut the stem approximately one centimeter from the end. Then place it in a vase of lukewarm water and add nutrient for cut flowers.
– Keep the vase in a cool place and avoid direct heat and fruit, as some fruits give off ethylene which can cause the flowers to wither faster, she says.
Amaryllis like onions
Before the amaryllis blooms, about one deciliter of water a week is sufficient. When it then blooms, you can water a little more.
Christmas rose
The Christmas rose can be left outdoors in a cool place. It is important to keep the flower’s soil moist if it is to be able to stand outdoors.
– Plant out in the spring when the frost has passed so it will bloom next year, advises Sofia Kaare Jansson.

But when should you actually get Christmas flowers so that they last until Christmas?
It varies a lot depending on what kind of Christmas flower you want. But there is a variety that you can buy already now and that will then bloom and bloom in time for Christmas Eve. Amaryllis on bulbs take about three to four weeks from bud to bloom. Then it will bloom for a week or so depending on how many stems it has.
Would you like a hyacinth instead? Then you have to wait a week or so because it only takes a week from bud to flower. Then it blooms for about one to two weeks.
