After disappearing from streaming platforms for a while, this excellent record-breaking Disney cartoon is back to the delight of young and old.
Every generation has its favorite Disney film. People born in the 1990s swear by The Lion King, Aladdin Or The Little Mermaidchildren of the years 2010-2020 tend to favor The Snow Queen Or Moana. But one of the studio’s best animated films in recent years (excluding Pixar productions) was released very recently and was a real critical and popular success, to the point of breaking a record. After disappearing from the platforms, it is back in streaming.
Released on November 24, 2021, Encanto immerses the audience in the heart of the mountains of Colombia. We follow the Madrigal family, who lives in an enchanted house and each member of which has magical powers. Everyone, except Mirabel, who has difficulty experiencing her difference from the rest of her family. When the house begins to lose its powers, Mirabel decides to investigate at the risk of unearthing family secrets that will allow her to learn more about her loved ones.
Colorful but also deep animated film about generational trauma and the weight of family secrets, Encanto is one of the great successes of Disney studios in recent years. Thanks to its gallery of characters and its double reading levels, children but also their parents can appreciate it. Throughout the world, the feature film generated more than $256 million at the box office, and achieved more than 3 million admissions in France.
Before winning the Oscar for best animated film in 2022, the cartoon above all broke a record: the song “Let’s not talk about Bruno” was positioned in 4th place in the 100 best-selling singles across the Atlantic according to the Billboard 200. This is the best ranking for a Disney title in 26 years, since only “L’air du vent” (Pocahontasin 1995) had done better. The piece had therefore done better than “Liberated, delivered”, the flagship title of The Snow Queen who had settled in 5th place.
After disappearing for a while from Disney+ (due to media chronology and broadcast on M6), Encanto is making its big return to Mickey’s streaming platform this Sunday, November 24, 2024. Enough to dive back into the magic of the Madrigal family just before the holidays, to the delight of children and their parents.
