Singapore has some of the strictest anti-narcotics laws in the world.
Singapore, located in Southeast Asia, has hanged a 55-year-old man who was convicted of drug trafficking on Friday, the country’s authorities say.
This is already the third execution within a week in the city-state of Singapore. All completed sentences were related to drug trafficking.
Singapore has some of the strictest anti-narcotics laws in the world. This year, a total of eight people have been executed in the country, seven of whom have been convicted of drug trafficking and one of murder.
The country’s authorities believe that the death penalty acts as an effective deterrent against drug trafficking. However, the UN and human rights organizations have criticized the city-state’s actions, because according to them, executions do not have a proven deterrent effect.
Last Thursday, the UN repeated its appeal that Singapore revise its position on the death penalty.
