The co-op shooter Space Marine 2 is soon changing how you can play online

Since Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 was released in September 2024, players have added numerous mods to the game. The developers are now announcing an important change: mods will no longer be allowed in public lobbies.

What kind of change is this? In a blog post on the official website of publisher Focus Entertainment, Space Marine 2 game director Dmitriy Grigorenko spoke about the topic of modding. This will no longer be possible without restrictions in online games in the future.

With the next major update in December, players will no longer be able to join public lobbies if they have mods installed. However, the modifications can still be used in private rounds without any problems.

In the future, there will also be custom “Eternal War” lobbies in which modders can also let off steam to their heart’s content.

Mods cause server problems for everyone

What’s behind it? The developer emphasizes that mods are a great thing and will contribute to the longevity of the game. However, they are currently responsible for a significant proportion of problems with server stability, which then affects players who do not use mods themselves.

Modders are also promised that the game will remain easy to modify in the future and that they will take care of repairing the access themselves if they accidentally damage it with a patch. They even want to release some dev tools to make modding even easier.

Saber seems to be succeeding where Rockstar is failing

How is this received by the community? The first reactions are extremely positive. It seems that Saber Interactive has managed to find a happy medium here. It is praised that the mods are not simply banned, but instead allow players to play with or without them.

We have compiled some of the reactions on Reddit for you here.

  • BBBeyond7: “This is the best decision they could have made. They don’t just ban them, but they don’t let them get out of control either (I’m looking at you, rock star).”
  • Torontogamer: “My favorite part is that it’s super simple, won’t take up a bunch of developer time from better stuff, and still allows everyone to play the way they want.”
  • fckinamidr: “Modded ‘Eternal War’ lobbies sound like the best thing ever.”
  • However, there is one point of criticism: It is not yet possible to collect experience points in private lobbies. If that doesn’t change, players will have to choose between levels and their mods for now.

The co-op shooter has also demonstrated a good understanding of its community in other ways. Just a few days later, it was announced that they wanted to reverse an unpopular change: Space Marine 2 was reversing changes because players complained about similarities to Helldivers 2
