In its final report, Brazil’s federal police accuse the country’s former president Jair Bolsonaro and 36 other people of participating in a coup attempt after the 2022 election defeat.
The police investigation was submitted on Thursday to the country’s highest court, which forwards it to the attorney general for a decision on prosecution and trial.
In the investigation, it has emerged that Bolsonaro and 36 others planned to “violently overthrow the democratic state”, reads a statement from the police. In their final report, the police call for charges to be brought against the suspected coup plotters.
The former Brazilian president was in the United States when violent riots took place in the South American country’s capital, but is accused of being the instigator behind the riots. Bolsonaro himself has denied involvement.
