Prices of real estate transactions are public. Here’s how to find them.
They say that curiosity is a bad flaw. However, who has never been tempted to ask their neighbor how much they bought their house or apartment, perhaps to reassure themselves that they have not been cheated or to estimate the value of their property? But money is always a bit taboo and not everyone likes to talk about it freely, even less when we’re talking about six-figure sums on average…
However, it is possible to easily obtain the answer to your question, without even going to ring the bell next door. The amounts of real estate transactions are in fact public and open to everyone. And everything is available on the internet. No need to travel anywhere. An internet connection is enough. The prices of the latest sales were updated a few days ago.
Since 2019, a completely free government site has made it possible to know all the transactions that have been carried out over the last five years: location, surface area, date of the transaction and, of course, sale price… All freely accessible data. On the other hand, naturally do not expect to find confidential information there, particularly on the identity of sellers and buyers.
To do this, you must go to the site explore.data.gouv.fr/immobilier. When you type an address in the search bar, the map automatically zooms to the desired neighborhood. The purple plots are those that have been the subject of a transaction. By clicking on it, the information appears. For the price, it is only the real estate value, which therefore does not take into account the sums linked to the furniture or agency fees.
However, it is not possible to go back as far as desired in the research: only the last five years are published. The latest update, carried out at the end of October, allows you to find all transactions carried out between June 2019 and June 2024.
While it may put off some people to know that this data is accessible, it is nevertheless impossible to hide it. “It is not possible to object to this broadcast [et] it is not possible to erase them”, specifies the State, explaining that “the provision of data made possible by the law of August 10, 2018. […] It is justified by a reason of general interest relating to the knowledge of the price of real estate by any person interested in this market. It should therefore make it possible to improve the transparency of real estate and land markets.” Only the inhabitants of Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin, Moselle and Mayotte are spared from this publication due to local specificities.
