Christmas – with all that it entails in the form of baking and Christmas gift shopping – is fast approaching.
And as Christmas approaches, many children write a wish list to Santa – who actually receives thousands of letters every year.

Postnord receives letters for Santa
In fact, a whopping 20,000 letters – with wish lists and greetings – were sent to Santa in 2023. Or yes, the postal address of “Santa” that Postnord is actually responsible for.
“It all started with the newspaper Jultomten, which started in 1891, to which children often wrote. When the newspaper stopped being published in 1935, many people continued to write to ‘Jultomten’. Today, Postnord handles the letters sent to Santa,” the company writes in a press release.
Since then, in the Postmuseum’s archives, a whole bunch of letters have been collected – some as old as 130 years.

– When we look at wish lists from the past, the wishes are very similar to today’s. Toys, books and pets top the lists year after year. The big difference between now and then is the amount of Christmas presents on the wish list. Children today simply want more things, but that is probably more a reflection of how we live today than the children themselves, says Hanna Nydahlcollection manager at Postmuseum, in a press release.

Postal code: Don’t forget this
Anyone who wants to send a letter to Santa must address the envelope with: Tomten, 173 00 Tomteboda.
But that is not the only thing that should be on the letter in question. It has been found that as many as a third – that is, over 6,000 letter writers – of the letters last year lacked a return address, which means that Santa simply cannot reply.

– Postnord has two wishes on its own wish list. That all children remember to write their address on the letter to Santa so that they can receive a greeting back and that the letters are sent in good time before Christmas. Then everyone has time to get an answer before Christmas Eve. I really want to encourage all parents to supplement their children’s letters to Santa with the name and address of the sender, says Kristina Olofsdotter at Postnord i a press release.
