An MMO on Steam has the highest number of players in 2 years because a free update offers new content

There is an MMO on Steam that takes place in World War II. Recently the number of players looked rather poor, but a new update attracted many players.

What kind of game is this? It’s about Foxhole, an MMO that celebrated its full release on Steam in September 2022 after being playable in Early Access for almost 5 years.

  • Foxhole is a World War II sandbox MMO in which players join one of two armies and fight in a never-ending war. Strategy is an important aspect here.
  • It is played in iso perspective. This means you look at your character from diagonally above.
  • In Foxhole, every player is a part of the huge machine. Not everyone is fighting at the front, some are engaged in the production of ammunition, others are recruiting… eh, I mean… preparing new players for war.
  • There are controllable war machines such as tanks and ships as well as infantry combat in a persistent world. The events of the battle can therefore have an effect days or weeks later.

Strong growth thanks to new content

What’s going on at Foxhole right now? Foxhole has seen strong but temporary growth in player numbers in the past few days.

While only around 2,100 players were online at the same time in the past 30 days and in the months before, the MMO reached a high of 10,658 players on November 18th (via SteamCharts).

Foxhole last reported more players two years ago in September 2022, when the MMO gathered around 11,800 players at the end of the early access phase.

Why did the number of players increase so much? The growth is directly linked to a free update released on November 18th that brought new content and some rework to the game.

Foxhole receives such an update once a year. The focus of this year’s update was on improving infantry combat. Infantrymen can now take anti-tank weapons and have access to a close combat system.

Additionally, new factories have been added to produce weapons and equipment for infantrymen, as well as the option to create personalized loadouts for infantrymen.

With its dark, warmongering world war setting, Foxhole stands out from the MMO genre – after all, fantasy and the Middle Ages are completely avoided here.
