Jonas Eriksson rages at the referees after Alexander Isak’s goal

Alexander Isak was robbed of a goal against Azerbaijan.
Now Jonas Olsson rages against the low level of the refereeing corps.
– It is a complete failure of the VAR team. This is probably the biggest technical mistake I have seen in the seven years that VAR has been used, he tells SVT Sport.

Despite Sweden defeating Azerbaijan with a clear 6-0, much of the post-game was about Alexander Isaacs VAR disallowed goals. The refereeing team disallowed the goal for offside, but it was clearly a wrong decision.

Isak’s anger after the VAR chaos

All Swedes at Strawberry arena celebrated Alexander Isak’s 4-0 goal in extra time in the first half. Suddenly everyone went completely silent. The goal was VAR-reviewed and inexplicably ruled out due to offside. But all replays showed the opposite.
– You burn a little. I won’t lie. You draw a line at a completely wrong fit, that’s too bad. I can accept assessment situations, that people can have different opinions and that wrong decisions can happen. But this is not it. You draw the line at the wrong pass, says the protagonist himself to Sportbladet after the match.

Another who thought it was a completely rash decision was the former elite judge Jonas Erikssonnow an expert in SVT. He thinks it’s probably the worst decision ever.
– It is a complete failure of the VAR team. This is probably the biggest technical mistake I’ve seen in the seven years VAR has been in use. That people at the European top level have such low knowledge, are so careless and miss is horrible and under all criticism, he says to SVT Sport.

The reactions after the goal

After the decision, there were many Swedes on X (formerly Twitter) who unleashed all their frustration.
“It WAS fucking better before, where is it even?”, writes one person.
“Especially when they found it after three minutes of review. After all the referees on the pitch correctly approved the goal,” comments another.
“Took it on the pass before, how is it even possible to make so many mistakes?”, wonders a third.
“VAR strikes me again with its magical, completely unforgettable qualities,” writes someone else.

It’s absolutely crazy that no one on the judging team realized the mistake once it happened. Enough for Sweden to win comfortably anyway, but Isak was robbed of a fully approved and fine national team goal. Sad for him.
