Electric cars are becoming more and more common on our roads, and with faster charging and longer range, they are now a practical option for more and more motorists.
EU requirements should favor electric cars
However, for those who do not have the opportunity to charge the car at home or at work, it can still be difficult to have an electric car.
A new EU requirement comes into force at New Year and is supposed to help on that point, reports All about electric cars.
Forced to install charging posts
From January 1, 2025, new requirements for charging infrastructure apply to parking spaces that are adjacent to commercial properties such as offices, industries or shops.
A commercial property is more specifically defined as a heated property that is not a residential building.
If such has a parking lot with 20 or more spaces, there must be at least one charging point for every twenty parking spaces. According to the requirement, one must also prepare for an increased number of charging points in the future.

May affect 4.3 million parking spaces
The decision on the new requirement was already taken in 2019, but the reason it only comes into effect now is that they wanted to give the property owners time to adapt their parking lots.
A report from Sweco estimates that the requirement affects between 33,000 and 50,000 properties and between 3.3 and 4.3 million parking spaces.

If you have a large parking lot, it can be expensive to install enough charging posts to meet the requirements. The costs fall on the property owners, who can, however, apply for support from the Environmental Protection Agency to finance the installation.
It has previously been warned that the new requirements could hit non-profit organizations with limited resources hard. The government has drawn up a proposal that these should be exempted from the requirements, which is expected to be decided before the turn of the year.
