A garbage truck driver finds a working gaming PC in the junk

In the midst of worthless scrap, a garbage truck driver makes a surprising find: hardware worth more than a thousand euros.

What did the garbage truck driver find? A user reports on Reddit that while on a tour as a garbage truck driver, he made a discovery that many people would envy: gaming hardware that was top of the range a few years ago:

  • AMD Threadripper 3960X (Zen 2, like the PS5 Pro)
  • Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 Ti
  • 32GB DDR4
  • Asus Prime TRX40 Pro
  • Unknown power supply
  • But it wasn’t until he got home that it became clear what treasure he had found in the middle of the scrap.

Does the hardware still work? Yes, apparently the hardware still works. Although the components found were not only dirty, but also wet, almost everything worked. After the Reddit user thoroughly cleaned everything with alcohol and let the parts dry for a few days, he was able to put the computer into operation, according to TomsHardware.

He just put the power adapter aside and took a new one because he no longer trusted the old one after his time outside in wind and weather. He also installed an SSD so that he could test the system.

What good is the hardware today? In 2018, when the Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 Ti came out, the system would have been absolutely top notch. The situation is similar in 2019, when the AMD Threadripper 3960X was released. But even today the hardware doesn’t have to hide. The CPU in particular is still good for gaming with its 24 cores and 48 threads (3.8 to 4.5 GHz).

The graphics card is slowly reaching its limits, especially when it comes to ray tracing, but as long as you play in 1080p or WQHD, it will still serve you well in almost all cases. The YouTuber KreativEcke has a video on the channel about the suitability of the old top class card. You can see in detail where the Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 Ti is now having problems.

How much is this all worth used? A look at Ebay reveals a tidy sum for used hardware (accessed on November 19, 2024):

  • AMD Threadripper 3960X: 350 to 500 euros (via eBay)
  • Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 Ti: 400 to 600 euros (via eBay)
  • 32 GB DDR4 Ram: Around 50 euros (via Ebay)
  • Asus Prime TRX40 Pro: Around 300 euros (via eBay)
  • The Reddit user found hardware worth around 1,100 euros.

Do you often find useful things in the trash? The Reddit user classifies his find in the comments on Reddit and explains: In 99% of all cases it’s really just junk, but occasionally there’s something useful. For example, the user’s Bluetooth keyboard also comes from trash. He found it unopened one day and now he’s using it on his new gem of a scrap metal gaming PC.

Also from AMD, but much newer, is a processor from the Ryzen family that was not granted a long life in a gaming PC. Its owner made a tragic mistake during installation that even brought YouTube big names and the hardware manufacturers to the scene: Gamer buys the fastest processor from AMD and destroys it with a simple mistake
