What is contrast material, what does it mean? Are there any side effects of contrast material?

Radiology aims to image the internal structure of the patient using various products, devices and methods in order to diagnose diseases before treatment. Radiological examinations are extremely important for the most accurate diagnosis and a successful treatment process.

What is contrast material?

In medical imaging, the contrast of structures and fluids in the body must be high. Contrast material is also used for this purpose. Apart from radioactive tracers, which emit radiation on their own, this substance that absorbs ultrasound coming from outside also has the ability to change.

Contrast agents are used to improve the visibility of blood vessels. Various contrast agents used in medical imaging are classified according to the imaging methods used.

What does contrast material mean?

The substance that plays the most important role in the field of radiology is contrast material. Thanks to these substances, doctors can make much more precise diagnoses. X-ray, MRI devices and CT (Computed Tomography) devices, which are among the imaging methods, use these substances. Gadolinioma is generally used as MRI contrast material.

CT contrast material generally contains iodine or barium. Thanks to contrast materials, the difference between tissues can be displayed more clearly. In particular, agents containing iodine are among the most preferred types. These substances are vital for an accurate disease diagnosis.

Are there any side effects of contrast material?

Although it is very useful from a medical point of view, it may be dangerous for people with contrast material allergies. For people with such an allergy, antihistamines are administered beforehand. There may also be various drawbacks for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

The contrast material used for MRI does not adversely affect the breastfeeding process as the amount of gadolinium substances that pass into milk is very low. Breastfeeding can be continued, but the decision should be made together with the mother and the doctor.

Some of the contrast agent side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Burning sensation in the area where the medication is administered
  • allergies
