Palestine: let’s make no mistake about the enemy
Jean-Claude Bjaï, Plan-de-Cuques (Bouches-du-Rhône)
Peace will be established in Palestine when the Islamist Iranian regime ceases to consider Israel and more generally the West as a civilizational enemy. Accusing Israel of savagery and bloody cleansing, when it only seeks to defend its inhabitants and recover its hostages, is to reinforce the regime of the mullahs and its cronies in their desire to eradicate the only democratic state of the region and put a target on the backs of Jews wherever they are in the world. The attack on the Grande-Motte synagogue and the Amsterdam pogrom are, unfortunately, only two recent examples. (“Readers’ letters”L’Express of November 7.)
A devastating Trumpism
Michel Le Grand, Thiais (Val-de-Marne)
“In the United States, Democrats stuck in anti-Trump panic”. I find Abnousse Shalmani’s formula relevant and his column on the Democratic campaign rather fair, although harsh. However, shouldn’t we broaden it and say that it is American democracy as a whole that is potentially bogged down, trapped by devastating Trumpism? As for Kamala Harris’ campaign, certainly imperfect and too weak in terms of incarnation and proposals, I do not want to overwhelm her. His task was almost insurmountable in the current situation. Europe must wake up!
Guylaine Remeur, Cagnes-sur-Mer (Alpes-Maritimes)
Where are our world, our country, our Europe, our administrations, our economy, our hopes, our dreams, our illusions going? United States, Tehran, China, Ukraine, Russia, friends, enemies: all this worries us and we, humble citizens, remain perplexed. Europe must wake up, must react. Our different countries, even with their particularities, their habits and customs, must unite their strengths, their weaknesses, their laws, in order not to sink, to be strong and to stand up to these dictatorships, to these ogres who want to rule everything, to destroy everything. . We cannot stay with our internal quarrels, our dissonances, our disagreements. Otherwise, it will be too late. The Olympics showed it brilliantly: when we are united, despite our differences, almost anything becomes possible. Let’s keep this state of mind to face the world of tomorrow, nay?, the world of today with all that is dark, dirty and terrifying. (“A Europe increasingly alone”by Eric Chol, L’Express of November 7.)
Volodymyr Zelensky, the moment of truth
Dominique Calmels, Millau (Aveyron)
How can Richard Haass and Charles Kupchan believe what they say? They advised two presidents, one of whom did nothing when the red line he had drawn in Syria was crossed (Obama) and the other went astray in the Middle East (Bush Jr.)… I understand what they are saying, but freezing a situation to obtain a ceasefire while thinking that we will be able to negotiate, later, the return of regions occupied or annexed by Russia, is that not going astray? Putin will never return them! We know very well that no one can trust him, even if he signed an agreement. After Ukraine, what will he want? The Baltic countries? Poland? Hungary? Out of the question! Cowardice is the order of the day in European bodies where the heads of state of the Twenty-Seven have put in place people who do not overshadow them and are not up to the challenge! Olaf Scholtz only sees his economic interest to the detriment of that of others: rather lie down in front of Putin than tighten his belt. European citizens will pay a high price. Without a common vision, the EU will disintegrate and Trump will happily play the elephant in a china shop. (“For Ukraine to survive…”L’Express of November 7.)
