Network director of the Hybrid Competence Center Jukka Savolainen considers the news good for Ukraine, but estimates that the impact on the course of the war may be limited.
– This is good news for Ukraine, because, among other things, it will be possible to alleviate some of the attacks on critical infrastructure during the winter, says Savolainen.
According to him, the range of the missiles in question – 300 kilometers – and the fact that there is a limited number of weapons, however, reduce the impact of the decision.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi has long hoped that the United States would give Ukraine permission to strike military targets on Russian soil with American long-range ATACMS missiles.
The ATACMS missiles have a range of about 300 kilometers.
– The decision would be more significant if it had been made by the administration that continues to lead the United States, Savolainen estimates.
