In the works for more than 10 years, the live-action Splinter Cell film project has now been canceled. It was its producer Basil Iwanyk who announced it to the site The Direct during the promotion of 10 years of the John Wick saga. He regrets that the project did not come to fruition, because for him, “this film would have been great”. Author, screenwriter and directors have obviously not found the right formula when listening to it, knowing that budget concerns are also to be blamed on this cancellation.
“We just couldn’t find the right way to do it, script-wise or budget-wise. But it was going to be great. We had a million different versions, but the movie was going to be hardcore and fantastic. It’s one of the films that got away from us, and it’s really sad.”
We recall that the announcement of a Splinter Cell film was launched by Ubisoft in 2012, with the desire to choose Tom Hardy in the role of the discreet agent who acts in the shadows. The actor was in high demand at this time, since he starred in the film The Dark Knight Rises in the iconic role of Banes. Another element that must also be taken into account: embarking on the production of a Splinter Cell film when no game has been released in 10 years also means taking the risk of speaking to a tiny part of the public. Because we must admit that the franchise probably no longer really exists in the eyes of the new generation, despite the arrival of a Netflix cartoon series. But we imagine that it is the streaming platform which will pay the price…
