Military activity accounts for a third of the increased emissions; the largest part is from fuel, with Russian troops accounting for 79 percent of emissions and Ukrainian troops for 21 percent. Other sources of emissions are the manufacture of explosives, ammunition, the construction of sieges and fuel used to transport military equipment from other countries. The emissions from the increased military armament taking place in the outside world are not included here.

SVT’s team has visited the National Park of the Holy Mountains where 80 percent of nature has been destroyed, causing large emissions, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources. The area was occupied by Russia from March to September 2022, but shelling still occurs daily.

In addition to the fact that the explosions destroy all living things at the impact site, this has major environmental and climate effects now and in the future. Indirectly, nitrous oxide can also be formed during chemical reactions. In addition, carbon monoxide and acidifying ammonia are released into the air.
