In a kitchen, hygiene is a crucial point to avoid any risk of contamination. It is therefore essential to regularly clean this room but also the objects used for cooking. Tea towels are one of them. Here are four tips to follow, from a virologist.
The kitchen is a place of life. We spend time there preparing our meals, eating them, washing the dishes and putting them away. And for this, we use tea towels. But do you clean them regularly enough?
A virologist provides a reminder on the essential cleaning of kitchen towels
Although they are very useful for drying hands or drying dishes, kitchen towels are then sometimes forgotten in a corner, before their next use. But be careful, because this bad habit can play tricks on you. “Your kitchen towels can become breeding grounds for bacteria and even transfer germs that can make you sick” indicates Dr Océane Sorel, alias @TheFrenchVirologiston Instagram.
What precautions should you take to avoid getting sick?
To avoid any risk, the virologist shares four practical tips, to put in place now, if you are in the habit of forgetting your tea towels in a corner of your kitchen. She advises:
- Do not use the same cloth to dry your hands and to wipe the work surface, as this facilitates the transfer of pathogens (viruses, bacteria, etc.) between surfaces and hands;
- Change cloth every timeto dry the dishes and clean the work surface, without forgetting to let it dry in the open air afterwards;
- Do not use a kitchen towel for more than two days in a rowthe best being to use a clean one daily and put the dirty one, from the day before, to wash immediately;
- Wash them in machine at 60°C. Because “traditional” washing at 40°C is not sufficient to eliminate microbes, even if you use a laundry disinfectant.
You now know the rules to follow, so as not to take any risks when handling these squares of fabric!
