Finnish alpine skiing hope Nella A raven had to end his career at only 25 years old due to back problems.
The decision to stop came just two days before the opening of the World Cup season in Levi. According to Alpine skiing’s umbrella organization Ski Sport Finland, Korpio was still preparing to compete in Levi at the beginning of November. According to Korpio, everything looked good, but last week the condition of the back took a significant turn for the worse.
It became clear that the back could not withstand competing and training in the way Korpio wanted. There was no prospect of getting my back into the condition required by elite sports.
Head coach of the Finnish women’s national team Johanna Tikkanen understood the decision.
– When I heard this, it was really a pity. Nella is a talented calculator and has achieved a lot during her career. However, I understood the decision. I’ve seen him on the slopes and seen the pain he was dealing with. This was certainly the right decision, Tikkanen described Levi on the eve of the World Cup competitions.
A tear rolled down his teammate’s cheek
The termination announcement was a tough spot for the teammates.
– A tear came to my cheek, of course. Great respect for Nella. It was a really great career. He has shown his guts many times, making his World Cup debut this weekend Aada Stump describes.
After the interview, Kanto spontaneously makes a nice gesture, forms a heart with his hands and sends a message during the interview.
– Love to Nella, Kanto says.
Another World Cup debutant agrees with the same message Silja Koskinen.
In December 2018, Korpio broke the Finnish women’s four-year scoreless streak at the World Cup. The then 19-year-old promise reached 23rd place in the Courchevel slalom. The raven was even expected Tanya Poutiainen good calculator. After that, however, health concerns began to weigh on us.
The next season was left unfinished. Rest did not bring relief. After a long period of uncertainty, Korpio was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that belongs to rheumatic diseases, Sjögren’s syndrome, in 2020. In addition, Korpio has therefore suffered from back pain.
All in all, Korpio reached the World Cup points four times.
Korpio’s situation shows how fierce a sport alpine skiing is.
– Alpine skiing is a sport that is really demanding on the body. At the hard level, there are a lot of injuries every year. Hats off to Nella. Many people would have given up playing when their back has had symptoms for several years. She has an internal pouch. It’s a shame to see him leave, Silja Koskinen describes.
A big role model for someone who has suffered injuries
Killing Korpio made him only 23 years old Erika From Pykäläki The most experienced of the Finnish team. It’s an interesting story in that, according to Pykäläinen, the average age of the top 15 in the World Cup in giant slalom is 28 years. Pykäläinen is therefore still a young accountant. The most experienced scorer sounds strange to Pykäläinen, because he is used to always being the youngest in the team at the World Cup.
– Nella’s announcement created a feeling of emptiness. I have known Nella since I was young. Nella was always able to talk about everything. He has understood me. Fortunately, that side does not disappear. He will always be my good friend. It still feels like there is no one more experienced and older than me on the slopes, Pykäläinen says.
The news came as a surprise to Rosa Pohjolainen.
– Nella has been a big role model for me. When I got into the national team, I looked up to Nella. I still look at it when it has come this far after all the difficulties. A very sad thing. I hope Nella finds all the nice new things in life, Pohjolainen says.
It’s no wonder that Korpio has been a role model for Pohjolainen. Despite his young age, the 21-year-old Pohjolainen has already had to rehabilitate himself on several occasions. After a memorable breakthrough for the Finnish sports people, Pohjolainen’s right knee has had to be operated on twice. First came the anterior cruciate ligament and coil, then the cruciate ligament.
– We have now got the pain under control. With the load, there is still work to be done on how much the knee can be strained without it becoming irritated. I think the situation with the knee is still getting better. It holds up well to counting. That is the main thing, Pohjolainen describes.
