Eni obtains the UNEP Gold Standard reporting for reporting methane

(Finance) – Eni received the “Gold Standard reporting” of the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) for their commitment to emissions reporting with the highest levels of data quality. OGMP 2.0 is an initiative of the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) of United Nations Environment Programmeaimed at establishing the global standard for the reliability and transparency of methane emissions reporting in the oil and gas sector.

Eni joined the OGMP 2.0 in 2020 and has busy to establish objectives reduction of emissions and ad progressively increase transparency and the accuracy of its reporting, prerequisites for measuring the effectiveness of the mitigation actions implemented. Eni’s effort was recognized in 2023 with the “Gold Standard Pathway” for significantly improving methane emissions reporting implementation plans. This year the company received the “Gold Standard reporting” for actually achieving i highest levels of data quality.

Eni believes that the natural gas have a role in the energy transition path to 2050 for its affordability, reliability, versatility and low carbon content compared to other fossil fuels. However, global action is needed to eliminate methane losses along the entire natural gas supply chain. Eni has set itself the objective of eliminate methane emissions by 2030 and more than halved emissions between 2018 and 2023. Upstream methane intensity of 0.06% in 2023 places the company among the industry leaders.

A fundamental lever of Eni’s methane strategy is collaboration with other sector players and international organizations that are committed to controlling emissions across the entire value chain. The company was among the founders of the UNEP Oil & Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) in 2014as well as the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) and the Methane Guiding Principles (MGP). In 2023 Eni joined the Oil&Gas Decarbonisation Charter (OGDC), as well as the Global Flaring and Methane Reduction Trust Fund (GFMR).
