Rookie goalkeeper Joel Blomqvist, who played a strong early season in the NHL, will continue his season in the AHL.
The Pittsburgh Penguins said on Thursday on their X account that they sent the 22-year-old by Joel Blomqvist to his farm team Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Blomqvist, who plays on an affordable NHL rookie contract, has been Pittsburgh’s best goalkeeper in the early season, as the Finn has accumulated a save percentage of 90.4 in eight games.
However, the Penguins will rely on their more experienced goaltenders who earn bigger dollars in the future To Tristan Jarry and to Alex Nedeljkovic. The duo’s contracts take just under $8 million from Pittsburgh’s salary cap.
Blomqvist, who hails from Uusikaarlepyy, is Pittsburgh’s second-round pick from 2020. Blomqvist, who made his breakthrough in the domestic league in Oulu Kärpi, played 45 AHL regular season games in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last season with a save percentage of 92.1.
