A ‘no’ is not the end, but the beginning of a negotiation, adds economist Van Gool. “Prepare well, talk to colleagues about how much they earn, and dare to aim high,” Van Gool explains. “It’s really an amount that makes you think: I’m never going to get this, then you’ll be fine.” But if you don’t manage to get more, it’s not your fault, the economist says. “The pay gap is a structural problem that cannot be solved by individual women negotiating more,” the economist emphasizes. “It plays out in all kinds of organizations, companies, governments, all over the world.”
