The streamer Asmongold is in a dispute with the streaming platform Twitch. He is annoyed by the moderation of the platform. Twitch is biased, uses double standards and acts wrongly. His complaints are apparently having some initial success: Some streamers are complaining that they are no longer making money from advertising on Twitch.
What’s bothering Asmongold right now? Asmongold is annoyed by Twitch’s moderation. What bothers him:
He himself was banned for two weeks after making anti-human comments about the Gaza war. The ban is okay for him too. He made a mistake and was punished appropriately for it. He takes responsibility for his actions.
But other streamers would also take a position on the Gaza war and make similarly blatant statements as he did when he was banned. These streamers would get away with it and would even be courted by Twitch. Although their statements are, in Asmongold’s eyes, anti-Semitic. He is particularly bothered by the Twitch streamer HasanAbi and those around him.
This was the last straw: A streamer, Central_Committee, had put a $100,000 bounty on the streamer Destiny and was only banned for 3 days (via Sportskeeda).
In Asmongold’s eyes, a much harsher punishment would have been due here.
Asmongold says:
A person can do something and nothing happens. Someone else says something and they get permanently banned. I also think the moderation is extremely biased. It is obvious that she is biased. And that will become increasingly clear as time goes on.
Asmongold wants to hit Twitch where it hurts: with money
This is Asmongold’s threat: Asmongold has announced that he will make public what is going wrong on Twitch.
He thinks he can shake up the industry that advertises on Twitch. He believes that if advertising partners withdraw their money, it will lead Twitch to moderate more “fairly”.
“Adpocalypse” threatens Twitch – streamers are losing thousands of dollars in advertising
What consequences does that have? It has now been announced that the streamer FaZe Kaysan has been de-monetized on Twitch. Kaysan says: A Twitch employee told him it was because of the use of the tag “Iran” (via Sportskeeda).
Although the streamer advertised on Twitch, he did not generate any income from it. Kaysan says that he is Iranian and has therefore been using the day for three years. He doesn’t talk about politics at all in his stream. You can see the corresponding stream excerpt on X.
The streamer StableRonaldo, also at FaZe, claimed on November 13th that his channel had also been demonetized (via X). However, there is no apparent reason why StableRonaldo, a Fortnite streamer, no longer makes money from advertising.
He says it went from $10,000 upwards to $9 and 65 cents.
There are fears that this could be the impending “adpocalypse” that advertising partners will specifically withdraw from Twitch and that some streamers will lose their basis for existence.
Asmongold says about the demonetization of streamers: You’re welcome
This is what Asmgonold says about it: He says he contributed to this adpocalypse. And “you’re welcome” – that’s just what happens. Essentially, it’s Twitch’s fault. It would never have gotten this far if everyone had taken responsibility, as he did for his statements that led to the ban from Twitch.
Asmongold also says: If Twitch bans him again, he will leave the platform in the direction of Kick or Rumble.
Chaos and uncertainty on Twitch
This is what lies behind it: It’s a difficult situation on Twitch, especially around the polarizing conflict in the Gaza Strip. Twitch has already taken measures to highlight such extremely difficult topics.
The current demonetization of streamers could be due to the fact that they were captured by the system. With demonetization, Twitch apparently wants to specifically prevent advertising from being placed in the context of the Gaza conflict.
But it all seems to be going wrong when the problem doesn’t arise with clearly political issues, but rather just because a tag was set while someone was playing Call of Duty.
Asmongold and HasanAbi are two poles of this discussion. However, it is not known what influence the two’s actions have on Twitch. It is not clear at the moment whether Asmongold has really contributed to the fact that some streamers can no longer earn money from advertising on Twitch.
