American Horror Story mastermind Ryan Murphy is one of Hollywood’s busiest series producers. After recently shocking true crime fans on Netflix with Monster: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez, he is now delivering his next nightmare series on Disney+.
The horror series Grotesquerie starts today with the first two of a total of 10 episodes on Disney+. This is not only surprising disturbing American Horror Story replacementbut also delivers one of the most radical series twists ever.
Ideal American Horror Story replacement: That’s what Grotesquerie is about
At the center of the horror series is a horrific and cruel series of murderswhich shakes a small American town. A serial killer named Grotesquerie uses his victims to create “grotesque” and disturbing death tableaux, usually with religious motifs. And these murders are being investigated by an extremely atypical investigator duo.
In order to track down Grotesquerie, Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash) relies on the help of the somewhat crazy nun-journalist Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond). As they follow the clues, however, the entire world around them seems to be falling into evil.
The 10 episodes of the horror series await you Mix of True Detective, Hannibal and American Horror Story. In contrast to the horror anthology, Grotesquerie tells an ongoing story that is far from complete after the end of the first season. The series was created by Ryan Murphy in collaboration with Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken, who also developed the drama series Doctor Odyssey (from November 28th on Disney+).
In addition to the leading actress Niecy Nash, known from The Rookie and Netflix’s Dahmer series, the cast also includes Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Monster: Menendez) as a hot priest, Lesley Manville (The Crown) as a diabolical nurse, Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story) as Lois’ comatose husband and football star Travis Kelce as a charming nurse.
Grotesquerie on Disney+ has a huge surprise in store
Grotesquerie is strange, twisted and can best be described as disturbing fever dream describe when, for example, the detective-nun duo drives through the desert singing (!) before the scenery is transformed into a hellscape by a wildfire – and characters behave more erratically and viciously with each episode. The biggest shock of the series, however, isn’t the gruesome serial killer murders or Priest Mayhew’s lustful looks, but rather a huge plot twist.
Don’t worry, we won’t spoil Grotesquerie’s big surprise for you here. But be forewarned: After just a few episodes, the horror story boasts a monumental twistwhich transforms the series into a completely new one. Looking at Ryan Murphy’s oeuvre, this is the most radical twist since American Horror Story: Roanoke.
